Building an escape room at home is a fun, cheap plan for an afternoon with friends or family. With a little creativity, some padlocks and paper you can create a surprising experience.
1. Pick a story
Every good escape room starts with a narrative: a heist, an abandoned lab, a haunted house. Define who the players are, what they must achieve and how long they have (45 to 60 minutes is ideal at home).
2. Design 5 or 6 chained puzzles
- Number and letter padlocks: the base of any home escape room.
- Hidden clues: inside books, under objects or in invisible ink.
- Codes and ciphers: Caesar, Morse or a simple mirror.
- Physical puzzles: jigsaws or hidden keys.
Golden rule: each puzzle should lead to the next one, and never leave two puzzles open at once with a small group.
3. Set the mood
Dim lights, background music and a few themed props change everything. A couple of LED candles and a sheet can turn your living room into another world.
4. Prepare a hint system
Someone acts as game master and gives hints when players get stuck. It prevents frustration.

A home escape room is great, but it cannot compete with movie sets, special effects and live actors. To feel a real one, try Awaken · The Cursed Chapel (horror) or Achijira · The Forbidden Cave (adventure) in Barcelona.

At Red Dopamine we have two rooms with live actors and movie-grade sets, for groups of 2 to 7 players: Awaken · The Cursed Chapel, our 90-minute horror escape room, and Achijira · The Forbidden Cave, a 100-minute adventure. Check the prices or book online.
